Information for Employees

Q. What happens if I become ill?  Will I receive sick pay?

A If you are absent from work due to illness, you can apply for disability income replacement benefits under our Short Term Disability plan. As long as you meet the qualifications for payment, and provide the necessary supporting documentation, you will receive payment as provided for in the Plan.

If you contract an illness which is widespread in the population, physicians will not want to see you in their office.  If this is the case, you should follow the procedure outlined below:

  • You must have telephone contact with your family physician (preferred), another duly qualified physician and receive treatment by phone, within five days of becoming ill.
  • You must complete your portion of the Short Term Disability form, noting on the Attending Physician’s Statement, the physician’s name and phone number, and submit a claim to Great West Life
  • Upon receipt of the form, GreatWest Life will contact the physician’s office for validation of phone treatment, and knowledge of condition.
  • GreatWest Life will then pay ‘reasonable’ benefits, depending on the severity of the epidemic illness, and the employee circumstances.

You can obtain a copy of the form from:

ArcelorMittal Dofasco Intranet

ArcelorMittal Dofasco web page

All employees, salaried and hourly, should follow this procedure if they anticipate being ill for 3 or more consecutive calendar days.

Q. What happens if I must stay at home to look after other family members who become ill?

A. You are permitted by law in Ontario to take up to ten (10) emergency leave days in a 12 month period. If you need to be at home to address an emergency condition which is caused by illness, you will be granted emergency leave days provided that you notify your immediate supervisor in a timely fashion. This time off is provided without pay. You can apply to have earned vacation applied to this leave period in order to receive pay during your emergency leave. It is important that you discuss your needs with your leader in these circumstances.  They will, in turn advise Human Resources.

Q. What happens if employees must be sent home?

A. If you must be sent home due to a widespread illness (e.g. operations or departments are being temporarily shut down) the following procedure will be applied:

  • Your leader will advise you if you will be impacted.
  • If you have remaining current year vacation available, you will be placed on vacation.
  • If you exhaust your vacation, or if you have no current year vacation remaining, you will be placed on a temporary, unpaid layoff.  A Record of Employment will be issued to you if you go seven consecutive days without work or earnings.
  • Your leader will contact you regarding return to work.

Q. Will I be allowed to work from home?

A. There may be some jobs where an employee can continue to perform their duties from home or some other remote location.  This will only be considered in situations where it is not possible for the employee to come to the workplace, and where the work is critical.

Q. How long do the H1N1 symptoms last?

A. Experts report that on average people are off work over a period of seven (7) days, but no one should return to work until 24 hours after being symptom free. Everyone must contact our Medical to be cleared to return to work.
